I happened across the Teyr Gallery in Bude recently and was delighted to find that Hannah, whose work I had admired a couple of years ago, has teamed up with two equally talented artists, Natalie and Sue, to showcase their work and encourage those of us who are so keen to learn.

The Gallery promotes their high quality varying art works alongside exhibits of featured artists, inviting viewers to appreciate and explore the narrative before them.

PLACE Architects Staff Enrichment Policy

Working with PLACE enables me to take advantage of our discretionary Enrichment Policy alongside training and CPD, in place to recognise the importance of activities outside of the workplace and the positive effects on staff physical and emotional well-being. The Policy provides a wonderful opportunity to embrace new experiences and to aspire.

‘The Language of Shadows’ Workshop

I was fortunate enough to secure a place with a small group of budding artists on The Language of Shadows oil painting workshop at the gallery. We spent a good couple of hours working with one paint colour only, a large brush, palette knife, paper stub, kitchen roll and sand paper of all things! The monochromatic painting effects were quite astounding and with Hannah’s valuable guidance we all created a portrait with fabulous subtle tones and a pleasingly good likeness.

A follow up workshop concentrated on a still life piece, again along the theme of light and shadow using one paint colour, learning to add and take away paint to produce the tones we craved. Our subject on this occasion was lemons, with the approach of learning to understand the paint, making mistakes and pushing through. It is amazing to find what can be achieved within a couple of hours.

Being part of such a friendly and supportive group was a real pleasure and I can’t wait for the next opportunity to be inspired all over again! I urge you to visit the gallery, a warm welcome awaits you.

Pottery Workshop

Continuing my creative theme, an outing to the Pottery Box was hugely worthwhile and provided a taste of the difficulty and fun involved in throwing clay on a wheel. Angelique, a highly qualified ceramicist, was wonderfully welcoming and made the whole experience a complete joy.

With gentle guidance myself and Jeremy managed to produce a masterpiece each to be proud of, with the added benefit and option of adding a ‘splash’ of colour at the end. How wonderful for us both to have the opportunity to unwind, broaden our knowledge and experience something new.

There are many classes on offer for all age groups, including throwing, raku firing and sculpting, and not just on an individual basis either; Angelique is always keen to work with schools, home education groups as well as community projects and festivals and we were delighted to support her thriving business.

Angelique’s passion really shines through and we were swept along with her enthusiasm and sense of fun – we can’t wait to pick up our fired pieces. Take a look at the Pottery Box website, perhaps you fancy a go yourself!
